In this 10-part series of the memorable road trip that was SUV Shootout 2024, we’ve already highlighted the six competitors and the route. From the third instalment, we started taking a closer look at how each of the former fared over the journey, with the mild-hybrid Toyota Fortuner featured first. Now it’s time to take a look at the latest iteration of its long-time rival, the Ford Everest…

The new-generation Everest — tested on SUV Shootout in entry-level, XLT trim grade — is arguably the most well-rounded vehicle in the company of six ladder-frame SUVs. The bakkie-based Blue Oval felt sure-footed on both the asphalt, on which the drive was exceptionally smooth, and on extensive stretches of gravel we travelled over the three-day journey.
The 2.0-litre, twin-turbo-equipped Everest also proved its mettle on Ouberg Pass, which, with its drive selector switched to 4H, it ascended and descended with ease. Of course, when the going gets extra tough, you always have the option of selecting 4L and engage the diff lock.

On the national road, Ford’s familiar four-cylinder oil-burner also returned a noteworthy fuel consumption figure. At one point in time during the drive, the 154 kW/500 N.m engine sipped less than 1.0 L/100 km more than the claimed figure.
Overall comfort was only enhanced thanks to the tech-laden interior. Even in base level of specification, the Everest is equipped with a raft of standard features, which includes a 12.0-inch, portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system, replete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, and an electrically-adjustable driver’s pew, which makes it a cinch to dial in your preferred driving position.
