In this 10-part series of the memorable road trip that was SUV Shootout 2024, we’ve already highlighted the six competitors and the route. Now, from the third instalment, it’s time to take a closer look at how each of the former fared over our journey. First up, the latest addition to Toyota’s local Fortuner line-up, the mild-hybrid model.

The Toyota Fortuner is, much like the Hilux, a South African staple. Spanning two generations, the “Fortuner” namesake has been around for two decades, with production of the second iteration (seen here in facelifted form) having commenced nine years ago. However, rather impressively, it didn’t feel its age during our 800-plus km journey. The Fortuner fared commendably.
The most notable addition to this new model comes in the shape of 48 V mild-hybrid technology, which has been incorporated into the tried-and-tested 2.8-litre, turbocharged oil-burner. Exclusively coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission, the four-cylinder diesel unit, which, as standard, churns out 150 kW and 500 N.m of torque, gains an additional 12 kW and 65 N.m when the battery is recharged.
However, it not only benefits from increased power and torque outputs — with the mild-hybrid set-up, the ladder-frame SUV is also more economical in the fuel consumption stakes. According to the Japanese automaker, this Fortuner sips, on average, 0.3 L/100 km less than the non-mild-hybrid version. The claimed fuel consumption is 7.6 L/100 km.

But back to the trip. How did the Fortuner fare? Well, in short, commendably (as expected). Its on- and off-road driving manners were commendable. The Fortuner’s overall build quality also proved solid, as we’ve come to expect from a Toyota-badged product.
In addition, exclusively available in flagship, VX guise, it is also equipped with a generous amount of standard equipment. As a package, the Fortuner felt polished and solid. The best-selling ladder-frame SUV in South Africa remains a tough act to follow. However, there are five more SUV Shootout rivals to highlight…
